David Porter - Managing Partner
David is a leading figure in the healthcare sector, with a depth of experience in investing in, and advising on, a wide range of companies. A member of the UK Department of Health's provider reform group, he combines sector knowledge with practical experience of having run companies himself. Before Apposite, David founded Nomura International's healthcare investment and corporate finance group in 1997, where he was instrumental in many diverse investments across North America and Europe. Prior to this, he gained experience in buyouts with Nomura's Principal Finance Group. He has been CEO of a number of companies, including an authorised bank. A chemistry graduate from Oxford University, David has more than 30 years' experience in all aspects of the investment and financial world.

 

Steve Adkin - Partner
Steve is responsible for Apposite's Healthcare Services investments. A founding member of Apposite, Steve was previously co-head of healthcare corporate finance at Nomura International, where he led a wide range of M&A deals and financings between 1998 and 2005 for emerging healthcare companies. Prior to this, he was a consultant at ZS Associates, a leading pharmaceutical consultancy firm, where he worked with most of the world's leading groups on a range of sales and marketing projects across Europe and the US. Before joining ZS Associates, he worked as an analyst in the aerospace industry. Steve has a Masters Degree in Engineering, Economics and Management from Oxford University.

 

Dr Allan Marchington - Partner
Allan is responsible for Apposite's Life Sciences investments. A partner at Apposite since its inception, Allan is a well-known entrepreneur and executive in the pharmaceuticals sector. Previously Allan was at Abingworth Management, where he was responsible for strategic changes at several of their portfolio companies. Allan joined Abingworth in 2003, from Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Cambridge Mass., where as a member of the senior management team he was responsible for Millennium's European activities and all of the company's technology investments. Prior to Millennium, he was principal founder and CEO of Cambridge Combinatorial, a combinatorial chemistry company that was acquired by Millennium for a substantial multiple of invested capital. Before setting up Cambridge Combinatorial, Allan worked for 7 years in a range of therapeutic areas at Pfizer, Sandwich. He has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Liverpool.

 

Dr Chris Hollowood - Principal
Chris joined Apposite in February 2007. Chris trained as a fund manager with Neptune Management, with responsibility for Healthcare sector investments, before moving into Healthcare focused venture capital and corporate advisory at Bioscience Managers. Chris attained his first degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in Chemistry, and a PhD in Organic Chemistry, both from Cambridge University. In between his first and second degree, Chris worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a medicinal chemist at GlaxoWellcome (GlaxoSmithKline) and Pfizer.

 

Sam Gray - Principal
Sam joined Apposite in July 2007. Sam has been involved in deal-making in the healthcare sector since 2000 when he joined Deutsche Bank's European mergers and acquisitions practice. At Deutsche Bank, he worked with a number of multinational clients on corporate divestitures and acquisitions, including public takeovers and leveraged buy-outs. Following this, Sam joined the Business Development team at Belgian pharmaceutical company, UCB, working on global product licensing and M&A, including UCB's acquisition of the UK public biotech company, Celltech, as well as a number of in-licensing deals and divestitures. Sam has a first degree in Natural Sciences and a master's degree in Chemistry from Cambridge University, as well as an MBA from Harvard Business School where he specialised in healthcare and corporate finance related topics.

 

Valerie Auffray – Investor Relations Manager
Valerie has over seven years experience in providing PR and IR consultancy to biotech and healthcare companies. Prior to joining Apposite Capital, Valerie was an Associate Director at Citigate Dewe Rogerson, a leading internal communications consultancy firm. She worked with a number of biotech companies at all stages of development across Europe and advised clients on financial transactions, including private fundraisings, IPOs and M&A, as well as crisis communications. Valerie graduated from the French Business School ISTM (Institut Superieur de Technologies et Management), Paris, and holds a degree in biology.

 

Kensuke Asanuma - Manager
Ken is a secondee from Mizuho International. He has a particular responsibility to liaise with the Fund's Japanese LPs and assist with portfolio company interactions with Japan. He was previously responsible for deal arrangement and structuring within Mizuho's Medium Term Note group and prior to that was a lending specialist in the wholesale markets in Japan. As well as his banking and financial knowledge, he is a fluent English speaker with considerable cross cultural knowledge and experience. He has a Law degree from Keio University and is a Chartered Member of the Securities Analysts Association of Japan.

 

Julie-Anne Lotter - Business Manager
Julie-Anne joined Apposite in October 2006 and is responsible for financial management, operations and administration. She previously worked in the investment and merchant banking divisions of Nomura International. During her time at Nomura, Julie-Anne was responsible for the operational support of the Nomura International corporate finance, equity capital markets and private equity groups, including the operational set up and ongoing support of the life science venture capital fund, Phase 4 Ventures. Prior to that, she was employed by leading London law firm, Reynolds Porter Chamberlain.
